BIO

Travis LeRoy Southworth (b. 1979, Honolulu, Hawaii) is a visual artist and image correction specialist. The content of his artwork is intrinsically connected to image manipulation in the beauty industry, in which he participates in as part of his day job. Travis’ art practice involves extracting bits of cultural detritus in the retouching process and employing methods of abstraction and erasure to explore contemporary culture’s fascination with its own dematerialization.

In 2013 he spent 6 months Switzerland on an artist residency creating new work involving the Large Hadron Collider at CERN. An archive of his time there was documented on his super collider blog.

Exhibitions include The Drawing Center (NYC), Martha Otero Gallery (Los Angeles), Mixed Greens Gallery (solo project, NYC), Thomas Robertello Gallery (Chicago), The Bronx Museum of Art (Bronx), Arthouse at the Jones Center (Austin) and the Center for Curatorial Studies at the Hessel Museum of Art (New York). He was awarded a 2010 Fellowship in Photography from the New York Foundation for the Arts. He also has participated in the Artist in the Marketplace (AIM 29) Program at The Bronx Museum of Art and received a BRIC Media Arts Fellowship. His work has been profiled in Time Out Chicago, Art Slant and L Magazine. Travis holds a MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a BFA from the University of Arizona.
