PROTEY TEMEN

BIO

Protey Temen is a mixed media artist working with drawings, videos, books and installations. Protey creates abstract visuals to explore and visualize the intersections between science and random visual data utilizing the poetry of everyday life processes.

“The essential topic that Protey Temen works with is researching the symbolical environment and analyzing it with the plastic language of abstract art. From pagan myths to the method of “sur-ritualism” discovered by him, Protey approaches step-by-step a quasi-scientific way of interpreting the world. What is the information and how can it be processed, what physical material is used in the composition of a particular object, why do we see a spot and perceive a symbol in a definite way, how do we influence our surroundings in order to execute various processes? All of these questions may be conventionally laid into the sphere of the sensitive, reflexive personal experience – facts that cannot be checked are codified and converted into common popular knowledge by Protey.

To prove his hypotheses, he explains his own intuitive discoveries about the world’s structure by using the approach and verbal/visual glossary of a quantitative scientist. The artist packs these pieces of knowledge into text, illustrative materials, schemes, and visual aids as he returns the aesthetic focus to a theory’s dry language. The scientific process usually implies the abandonment of aesthetics in favor of a didactic understanding of the meaning. Protey combines the emotional experience and he manifests to us as spectators and students of his “Inner School of Open Studies” the similarity of fundamental strategies of the scientific approach and art practices aimed at the revelation of the only true and faithful version of reality.” — Introduction by Yulya Yusma

STATEMENT

Uncertain Praxis is a type of activity aimed at conducting experiments without any given goal or a specific question. What are such experiments for? The world around us breathes with confidence of clarity.

Chains of events tend to be interpreted through established meanings and cause-and-effect relationships. Step by step, intelligent and educated people help us to flow into the stream of the new time, where everything is as clear as possible. And what happens if you question any of the basic truths? Could it be that the water is not wet, and the fire does not burn? Try to find out for yourself.

At the end of the first academic year, the Inner School of Open Studies, an interdisciplinary art project devoted to the study of the interaction of particles in time and space, was held summer homework. The result of the training was a series of 123 short videos of optional experiments. Methodical practice as a method of eradicating the meaning of the message. The formal basis of the process was the transfer of selected elements of past school sessions from a flat to a volumetric environment, with the corresponding characteristics of physical bodies. At the end of the work, the results were presented in the form of a documentary exhibition.

The second part of the project was supplemented with materials for the analysis of previously obtained results, as well as an approach to the organization of the workplace of the laboratory itself. The combination of materials, action dialogue, unfolding of space, the possibility of viewing, a premonition of meaning.

Clear. Accessible.
